Banish the mid-winter blues...

The middle of winter can feel like a long haul, but here at debretts.com we see reasons to be cheerful.

Valentine's Day can sometimes feel over-commercialised, but don't let that put you off. Indulging in romance, and brushing up your dating etiquette, is the perfect way to get the most out of those long February evenings.

And if you've had enough of cosy domesticity, why not take a look at our February season listings? You'll be amazed how much is going on out there – from Six Nations rugby to the Venice carnival.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to reaffirm an existing romance, or make a foray into new pastures. Whatever your situation, choose your card with care. If you're uncertain of the recipient's taste, avoid explicit, bawdy or  over-sentimental cards – they may backfire.

If you're dating on, or near, Valentine's Day remember hot dates don't just happen. The perfect romantic interlude is equal parts chemistry and strategy. So plan your evening with care, arrive on time, switch off your mobile, engage in eye contact and don't hog the conversation. If you're the inviter, pay the bill – nothing kills romance like going Dutch. Our dating tips will prove invaluable.

And if things go well, and you're ready to move on to the next stage, remember modern seduction is about clever conversation, a well-placed compliment and some subtle flirting.

Out and About in February

February is a surprisingly lively month, so why not explore our February Season listings?

For rugby fans, the RBS Six Nations championship begins on 4 February, running until mid-March. If sport isn't your thing, why not take a look at the Bath Literature Festival, an inspirational mix of talks, debates and workshops, in one of England's most beautiful cities.

Fans of street theatre will enjoy the Chinese New Year festivities in London's Chinatown, or may be tempted to go further afield to enjoy the glamour of the Venice Carnival.

And if indulging in gourmet food is your idea of the perfect antidote to mid-winter, now is the time to make a trip to the picturesque seaside town of Rye, where they'll be enjoying their annual celebration of delicious local scallops.
